Step 4: Understand Front-of-Pack Claims — What They Mean and What They Do Not

FSSAI Licence Number

Every packaged food sold legally in India must carry an FSSAI licence number — a 14-digit number beginning with the manufacturer's state code. This appears on the label, usually near the manufacturer's address.

The distinction matters: a biscuit past its "best before" date may taste stale but is unlikely to be dangerous. Dairy or meat past its "use by" date can cause food poisoning.
