BMR Calculator

Basal Metabolic Rate is what your body burns just lying still, doing the boring but essential stuff: pumping blood, breathing, repairing cells. Before you've walked a single step or eaten a single meal, this is what your body's already spending. It's the number every other calorie calculation builds on top of. Fill in your details below to get yours.

For most people this accounts for 60-75% of everything they burn in a day, well more than exercise contributes. That's part of why crash diets tend to fail — cut calories too hard for too long and your body doesn't just burn fat, it starts lowering its resting burn too. Knowing your actual BMR is the first step toward picking a calorie target you can stick with.

How BMR is calculated

This calculator uses the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, the modern standard used by dietitians because it's more accurate across body types than the older Harris-Benedict equation:

Men: BMR = 10 × weight(kg) + 6.25 × height(cm) − 5 × age + 5
Women: BMR = 10 × weight(kg) + 6.25 × height(cm) − 5 × age − 161

Why BMR matters for weight management

Whatever your goal — losing weight, holding steady, or putting on muscle — the plan starts here. Go too far below your BMR for too long and your metabolism can actually slow down in response, a real, well-studied effect people sometimes call "starvation mode." That makes further progress harder and rebound weight gain more likely once you go back to eating normally. Working from your actual BMR helps you pick a target that's aggressive enough to get somewhere without tipping into that territory.

It also drifts down with age, roughly 1-2% per decade after 30, mostly because people lose muscle gradually over time. That's the quiet reason the same diet that kept your weight steady in your twenties can leave you slowly gaining in your forties, unless activity or strength training makes up the difference.

What affects your BMR

A handful of factors explain most of the variation between people:

  • Muscle mass — it burns more at rest than fat does, so two people at the same weight can have noticeably different BMRs depending on how much muscle they're carrying.
  • Age — BMR tends to drift down after your twenties and thirties as lean mass naturally decreases.
  • Sex — men usually run a bit higher than women at the same weight, mostly down to muscle mass differences.
  • Hormones — thyroid function especially. An underactive thyroid can pull your BMR down noticeably.
  • Very low-calorie dieting — stay in a severe deficit long enough and your body starts conserving energy by lowering BMR.

Individual results vary based on factors this calculator doesn't measure (body composition, medical conditions, medications). Always consult a doctor or registered dietitian before making significant changes to your diet or exercise routine.

Short for Basal Metabolic Rate — the calories your body needs just to keep running while you're completely at rest. Breathing, circulation, cell repair, that kind of thing. It usually makes up 60-75% of your total daily burn.
