Packaged Juice vs Fresh Juice India: Why Real Juice Isn't Real — Ingredients & Sugar Shock

Packaged Juice vs Fresh Juice India: Why Real Juice Isn't Real — Ingredients & Sugar Shock — AaharIQ Food Safety

Real, Tropicana & B Natural juices contain added sugar, sodium benzoate & flavours. Comparison of packaged vs fresh juice nutrition for Indian consumers 2026.

Packaged Juice vs Fresh Juice India: The Shocking Difference

"Real fruit juice" on the label sounds healthy. "Made from real fruits" sounds natural. The reality of India's packaged juice category is very different from what the branding suggests.

What "100% Juice" Actually Means in India

Under FSSAI regulations, a product labelled "100% fruit juice" cannot contain added sugar if made from direct-pressed juice. However:

"Juice drink" or "nectar" — contains typically 10–30% actual juice, rest is water, sugar, and additives

"Made from concentrate" — fruit is pressed, water extracted (reducing volume for transport), then water added back. Vitamins and volatile flavour compounds are mostly lost in this process. "Natural flavours" are then added back.

"Contains real fruit" — could mean 1% real fruit with 99% sugar water

The label "Real" (Dabur) is a fruit drink brand name — not a claim about the product being real fruit juice. Much of the Real product range is juice drink (25–40% juice) rather than 100% juice.

Sugar Comparison: Packaged vs. Fresh

Product

Sugar per 200ml

15g (with fibre)

The sugar content is similar — but the critical difference is fibre. Fresh juice from whole fruit retains some fibre. Packaged juices contain zero fibre. Without fibre, the sugar is absorbed faster, causing a higher blood sugar spike.

What Else Is in Packaged Juice?

Sodium benzoate (E211) — present in many fruit drinks; forms benzene with Vitamin C (see our sodium benzoate article)

Potassium metabisulphite (E224) — preservative, causes asthmatic attacks in sensitive individuals

Added Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) — creates benzene risk when combined with benzoate

Natural flavours — synthetic compounds added back after concentrate processing

Colour — some products use permitted artificial colours for visual appeal

The Verdict: Is Packaged Juice Healthy?

Packaged fruit juice — even the "100% juice" variety — is essentially sugar water without the fibre that makes whole fruit healthy. It lacks the satiety, the fibre, and the full phytonutrient profile of fresh fruit.

Better choices in order:

Juice drinks (rarely — high sugar, low fruit)
